A report by the Department of Health estimates that unused medicines cost the NHS around £300 million every year, with an estimated £110 million worth of medicine returned to pharmacies. Pharmacy needs to showcase that it takes medicines waste seriously and is taking action through the Local Pharmaceutical Committees (LPCs).
– Reduce the NHS burden from unused medicines through clinical interventions as well as brief behavioural interventions
– Raise awareness within pharmacy teams of their role to reduce medicines waste from unused medicines
– Demonstrate how data can be collected to show the reality of medicines waste and highlight that pharmacy isn’t fully responsible for unused medicines
– Be aware of your local LPC’s campaign and your pharmacy’s involvement.
